August 10th, 2003- probably the hottest day that year! Four musicians
assembled at the top of the Somerset Pub in Abergavenny (next to the kitchens
for added heat if needed!) for a first rehearsal together. Just a few
moments later, having played through ‘Atlantis’ and several
other Shadows ‘standards’, we knew we had something special-
it was simply a euphoric experience for the guys and myself- and ‘Bungleflint’
was born.
I had dreamed of putting together a Shadows-style line-up for a long
time, but getting just the right quality of musicians with a genuine love
for this style of music is a daunting task- through meeting and playing
with Richard, Phil, and Andy, the dream became reality.
We are very proud of what we have achieved in our first year together-
an inaugural appearance at the Shaddicts ‘Cliff & The Shadows’
weekend in Blackpool in November 2003, where we had the thrill of Brian
Locking ‘standing-in’ with us on bass guitar- (and we’ve
been asked back for this year’s function!)- recording this, our
first album with the superb ex-Shadows bass guitarist, Alan Jones, featured
on four tracks as well as co-producing and vocal arrangements- and we’ve
already several bookings in the pipeline to take our stage show around
the UK!
Equipment used:
Maurice plays a modified Japanese Fender Hank Marvin Signature guitar
with 2 Seymour Duncan Pro 2’s and a DiMarzio FS-1 pickup; a Burns
Legend (on the Burns tracks;) through a Zoom RFX 2000 echo unit with EFTP
echoes into a 1972 Vox AC30 with Celestion Blue (Silver) Speakers. The
rhythm guitar on ‘Fandango’, ‘Time Drags By’ and
‘Little Bitty Tear’ is a Tanglewood TW30NS electro-acoustic.
Phil plays an Alan Brason Custom Strat fitted with Kinman pickups through
an Alesis Q2 echo unit with EFTP echoes into a late 90’s Vox AC30.
He used a Gibson ‘Dove’ acoustic for rhythm and lead parts
on some of the vocal tracks and as rhythm guitar on ‘Blue Sky, Blue
Sea, Blue Me’.
Andy played an Epiphone Paul McCartney ‘Violin’ bass guitar
through a Behringer bass amplifier.
Richard plays a Pearl drum kit and Sabian cymbals.
Acknowlegements:
This album would not have been possible without the valued support of
the following people, to whom we are all indebted.
Ken Eaton- for his sponsorship and incredible help & support for
us at rehearsals.
John Hall- for his belief in us and his untiring support throughout rehearsals-and
his humour!
Derrick Woodcroft- for his financial help in supporting this project
and for finally admitting at long last that he does like The Shadows!….Thanks
Dad!!
John David- our Recording Engineer at Berry Hill Studio in the Forest
of Dean- his input and enjoyment of the recording sessions was a great
support through the 2 x 12 hour recording sessions!
Alan Jones- for simply being Alan and an inspiration to us all!
This album is dedicated with love to the memory of my beautiful wife,
Joy, who was so suddenly taken away from me before she had heard the fruit
of our labours-her memory was my personal inspiration to carry on with
this project-I’m certain she has heard it now…..
‘Cavatina’ is especially dedicated to Joy & Bruce Welch
for reasons only he ,I and Joy’s family will understand- with special
thanks to Brian Locking for his special love and support through the dark
days……..
